Abstract [eng] |
Background / objective Bradyarrhythmia is one of the early cardiac postoperative complications. However, it could happen later – a few weeks or months after congenital heart disease surgery. Permanent cardiac pacing is needed in rare cases. Our purpose has been to reveal how often, after which operations and when permanent cardiac pacing is necessary; another goal was to compare our data with the data from other clinics. Patients and methods We analysed retrospectively 2582 congenital heart surgery cases from the period 1994–2006. All operations were performed at the Vilnius University Hospital Santariðkiø klinikos. Results Permanent pacemakers were implanted for 33 patients (1.3%). The age varied from 5 days to 15 years (mean, 4 years). Permanent cardiac pacing was needed for 15 patients of 250 (6%) operated for a ventricular septal defect, for 3 patients of 87 (3.4%) after atrioventricular canal correction surgery, for 6 of 14 (42.5%) Senning operations and for 2 of 12 (16.7%) Rastelli operations. There were two pacemaker implantations for the Tetralogy of Fallot complete corrective surgery patients. Conclusions Ventricular septal defect closure and intraatrial repair of transposition of the great vessels were the most common reasons for permanent cardiac pacemaker implantation in our clinic. Our results were similar to those reported from other clinics. |
