Abstract [eng] Smell is one of the main human senses. Nowadays people tend to spend rather big sums of money for aromatherapy, removal of unpleasant smell, wearing scent. It should be noted that smell is important in traditional culture, people plant and grow trees, bushes, flowers, grass mainly because they smell nice. Various poetical means are used in folklore texts, especially folk songs, to express man’s mental state, feelings, even relations between people. One of them is smell. The subject of this paper is smell in Lithuanian folksongs. Over 3 000 texts of Lithuanian folksongs, descriptions of wedding customs, research papers on culture were studied in order to illustrate use of smell. The aim of the study is to reveal the meaning and sense of smell in Lithuanian folksongs. The paper focuses on the meaning of smell in folk songs in the context of wedding traditions and family relationships. Analysis showed that smell plays an important role choosing a wedding partner. The smell of wine was found in wedding folksongs. Youth, awakening of nature, human life are also associated with nice smell. A tendency to link nice smell to heaven and bad to ageing was noticed. Nice smell is also linked to close environment, family members. Nice smell gives a psychological effect, helps to calm down, regain positive emotions.
