Abstract [eng] The paper deals with the phenomenon of synesthesia in Marcel Proust’s cycle of novels IN SEARCH OF LOST TIME. Proust‘s particular attention to smell (odour) and taste is linked to asthma attacks he would suffer since his childhood and oftentimes find himself facing life or death. It is not smell itself that imparts the dimension of endlessness in Proust’s cycle of novels since the narrator periodically experiences the feeling evoked by linking it to the his childhood memories that flood back. Seeking to materialise smell Proust enriches it with additional synaesthetic qualities. That is firstly revealed in his famous SWAN’S WAY, the first novel of the cycle, in the scene with hawthorns. He starts by linking smell to sound, some melody. Further the author expands the characteristics of smell by adding colour, a velvet touch, i.e. by linking it to the tactile sensation. Proust draws on synesthesia as if wishing to materialise smell. At the same time smell (odour) plays a special role. It is beyond doubts that no one can imagine this cycle of novels without smell characterised above. Furthermore, the author as if assures that the world is all-encompassing.
