The Lithuanian language abounds in competitive language units, variants (varieties of the same word) and synonyms (words of an identical or similar meaning). Derivative variants and derivative synonyms are one type of variants and synonyms. The present paper discusses synonyms of the noun KVAPAS(SMELL) and adjective KVAPUS, -I (ODOROUS). The material was drawn from Dictionary of Synonyms by Antanas Lyberis, Lithuanian Language Dictionary and Corpus of Lithuanian Language. Four members of the noun KVAPAS(SMELL) presented in Dictionary of Synonyms by Antanas Lyberis are included. In Lithuanian Language Dictionary, 21 cognate derivative of a similar meaning were found. Five groups of derivative variants, composed of synonymous cognate derivatives (their members differ in root vowels and number), were compiled and analyzed. The group of synonyms of cognate nouns, which includes derivatives of close semantics that belong to eleven types of derivation, was analyzed as well. [...]. |
