Abstract [eng] The aim of the paper is to analyze what and how abstract objects although not perceived as smelly in the Lithuanian language worldview are ascribed to smelly of different intensity and spread. 150 examples were studied, reference was made to the collocations of the forms of such words as DVOKTI, SMIRDĖTI, TVOKSTI and DVOKAS, SMARVĖ, TVAIKAS and abstract nouns gathered in republican, local, popular, specialized periodicals, fiction and non-fiction literature and parts of Seimas verbal reports compiled by Vytautas Magnus University Computational Linguistics Centre (http://donelaitis.vdu.lt). Research was conducted in the framework of a cognitive approach to language. A metaphorical model, the scheme of the existing and /or self-forming relations between the source and the target spheres in language users’ consciousness was expressed by formula X is Y. The metaphorical model ABSTRACT PHENOMENON is SMELLY OBJECT was employed to perceive such objects of reality that are associated with the ideas and rationality. Such abstract phenomena are conspicuous but usually do not interfere. On the other hand, abstract phenomena with unpleasant smell are out of control. Analysis of the examples showed that abstract phenomena with unpleasant smell are mostly related to the sphere of political life. Analysis of the metaphorical model ABSTRACT PHENOMENON is SMELLY OBJECT leads to the conclusion that this model signifies or even strengthens negative judgement of abstract phenomena. If an object, phenomenon, process, or moral category is judged positively applying the criterion of rationality, but ascribed to smelly in the language worldview, it allows to state that this emotional judgement, based on a subjective experience, is showed.
