Abstract [eng] Numbers and calculations, the part of the comprehensive curricula of primary and basic education (2008), and the current document determining the content of teaching mathematics, is the most important and the widest section of mathematical activities yielding numerous teaching possibilities. Based on the survey of achievements in mathematics at a primary school we may state that the calculation skills of most pupils would not be bad. However, it also has shown the common mistakes made by pupils when solving problems from various spheres of mathematics, which leads to a lower evaluation of their work. For this reason, when teaching pupils to do most of the simple calculations, it is necessary already in the first grade to form visual images of calculation on the basis of which the respective capabilities could be further successfully (self-) developed. Formal explanations alone are not sufficient for the formation of visual images of numbers and calculations. So it is necessary to use various visual aids and teaching/learning shapes/forms.
