Abstract [eng] In order to design the structures rationally, one needs to know the distribution of tension in them. In practice load is transferred to cross-section through a certain area having limited dimensions. This applies to caps of columns, pads, supporting parts of structures, in supports for beams, etc. Uneven distribution of stress causes concentration of tension. The state of tension-deformation in concrete blocks compressed by loads coming from opposite directions is theoretically and experimentally analysed in this article. A complicated state of tension occurs in the blocks. We prove that intensity, size and shape of concentration zones depend on the width and location of the area under load as well as on the ratio of dimensions of a certain part of structure. Theoretical calculations of tensions under local compression frequently are carried out when the state of tension concentrates on a plane. The state of tension in plates was calculated using the net method. The calculations worked out are compared with experimental deformations on the sides of plates. When the elements are loaded centrically or with eccentricity the load covering 1/6 of the width of the plate and the size of the area under load reaches one third of the width of the plate, horizontal tensions were analysed in the area exposed to loads coming from opposite directions. When the eccentricity amounts to one third of the width of the plate, we analysed the tension in the lateral zone of the edge more distant from the impact of load. Proper evaluation of concentration of tensioning allowed us to calculate the bearing capacity of plates more precisely, to detect zones exposed to heavier or lighter loads and in case of necessity to strengthen or weaken them.
