Abstract [eng] The works by Antanas Vaičiulaitis are discussed and analyzed in various aspects. The object of the present research is the short story “Vidudienis kaimo smuklėj” by Vaičiulaitis. For the analysis 32 fragments of the text were selected. The methods of analysis and interpretation were applied to the present research. The collected empirical material is discussed in the aspect of text linguistics: language means and style fi gures used to create the images and features of characters, the depiction of time and space, and characteristic text cohesion devices were analyzed. The conclusion could be drawn that in a rather short story the specific time (half-day) is named in strokes as well as the close (the inside of the inn) and open (the landscapes of the yard and the road away from it) space is described. Moreover, three bright pictures of real characters who distinguish themselves in different appearance and characters and who represent different castes are created by means of aptly chosen language means. We mostly learn about the characters not from the narrator but from their speech (dialogues and talks) where the personages’ view to different things, life philosophy, etc. is revealed. Though the characters are not assessed directly, it is assumed that through the words of the character Severinas Šendriškis, the authors’ attitude and world-view are conveyed. The characteristic stylistic devices of the work: phraseologisms, swear-words, pejorative words, similes, felicitous epithets and repetitions, periphrases, oxymoron, etc. that are often mixed with subtle humour, (self)irony is a wonderful example of Antanas Vaičiulaitis’s individual style.
