Abstract [eng] The paper analyses the functions of the café in Jean-Paul Sartre’s novel La Nausee. The functions are understood here as the purpose and the activities of the café. They are divided into direct and indirect. The direct ones are those that correspond to the nature of its activities, i.e. to provide food and drinks to the clients, as well as opportunities to meet one’s friends and to have a good time. The cafe is the place where Antoine Roquentin, the protagonist of the novel, spends a lot of time; it becomes his way of life. The indirect functions of the café are those that are incidental; they don’t describe the café as a phenomenon. It is not by chance that the protagonist comes here to make love to its owner; here he writes his diary and experiences the absurdity of everyday life. Here, in the café, he is looking for solitude which is the main condition for him to be able to philosophize. It is not by chance that the author draws parallels between him, Robinson Crusoe and philosopher René Descartes. It is the place where the protagonist passes into the main dimension, the nausea, while observing people and the surroundings. The café becomes the protagonist’s observation post – not only does he observe what is happening around him but also moves towards the key dimension – the nausea – due to his observations. The café helps him experience unpredictability of his own existence; that is why it becomes the place of the imperative fortuity.
