Abstract [eng] Personal consumption and GDP are the indicators that reflect the standard of living in the country. Personal consumption reflects population choices how much disposable income to spend on material goods and services. Personal consumption expenditure comprises the largest share of GDP. Researchers agree that in the theories of personal consumption income is the major factor that determines personal consumption. However, their opinions about which incomes, current, future, permanent or related, have greater influence differ. According to the theories of personal consumption, such factors as interest rate, expectations, assets, inflation. personal consumption are also deciding. Personal consumption also depends on a decision to save. An optimal rate of savings shows the maximum consumption per capita and determines the level of production in the country. Part of savings is used for investment. The latter can lead to technological progress, which promotes economic growth. Although positive rates of economic growth have been seen in Lithuania recently social problems such as unemployment, poverty and other remain. Therefore it is important to raise the standard of living that encourages personal consumption. Most of population spend all of their disposable incomes for basic material goods and services because disposable incomes do not provide a sufficient level of the standard of living for part of Lithuania’s population. This raises the problem how much of their incomes people can save and how much of their savings lead to investment increase, that contributes to economic growth and improved standard of living.
