The paper introduces Jonas Rimašauskas’ (1920–1972) collection of documents kept in the Department of Special Collections and Archives of Kent State University, USA. J. Rimašauskas became familiar to Lithuanian society in recent years after announcing that he was the author of records on Jew rescuing now kept in A. Šapoka’s archive. The records about and lists of Jew rescuers in Lithuania during World War II were published in a book “Žydų gelbėtojai” (Rescuers of Jews) in 2008. Questionnaire survey material is kept in the archives of Kent University. J. Rimašauskas, participant of the anti-Soviet and anti-tsarist resistance movement, prisoner of Stutthof concentration camp, after the war set up a division of Lithuanian Martyrology and all his life made up lists of the deportees, persecuted, imprisoned, sent to camps, victims of the Nazi regime, recorded memories of witnesses to the Holocaust. The paper discusses the questionnaire "Assisting Persons of the Jewish Nationality in Lithuania during the Nazi Occupation" (approved in 1948). The collected material evidences that hundreds of the Lithuanian intelligentsia, priests, teachers, doctors helped to save Jews during the war, cases of rescue of Jews in Šiauliai County are provided. Material of the second questionnaire "Supporting Lithuanian Displaced Persons in Camps and Refugees in the USA" is important for researchers who investigate the development of Lithuanian emigration. Analysis of the material kept in the archives of Kent University is important for researchers who deal with wartime issues, victims, perpetrators, rescuers in the Holocaust. |
