Abstract [eng] In one of the movies of Jonas Mekas Semeniškiai is named as the centre of the universe. The human relation with that place opens out through the duplicating prism of view. It becomes a pretext to discuss double “I” identity of poet and fi lmmaker, in which consciousness of place and speech, experience of an “other” is particularly significant. With reference to thoughts of David M. Jordan and Frederick Bracher, Mekas’ “I” opens out as a presence of regional author in in-between world, and the analyzed texts highlights the integrity of different regional cultures. Philosophical hermeneutical conception of regional identity (Andreas Luckner and others) is very important for the analysis of Mekas texts marked by cultural phenomenon. One of the most important poetical buttresses while talking about modernistic spread of regional identity is Semeniškių idilės. Semeniškiai and poetical relation with that place open out as Lithuania’s or just as Lithuanian country’s metonymy. Problematic spectrum of regionalism allows having a new look at the worldview of late Mekas oeuvre. The article analyses several movies and some poems from Reminiscencijos and Dienų raštai. Lithuanian (Semeniškiai) village and New York opens out as components which mould double identity. Their interaction reveals through observation of the world and things in it, in the environment of meetings and conversation, walking and other motions. All this takes the form of image and language fragmentation and the modernistic form which is an integral part of local self-awareness. Regional identity in Mekas’ world-view arises as a (metha)physical power, which encourages to search for yourself in already rootless present, where the space is created through things, walking and conversations.
