The article deals with the spread of the motif of a daisy in Lithuanian poetry of the 20th–21st centuries. Genesis of the motif of a daisy is linked to the popularity of motifs of plants, love lyrics, the tradition of folklore post-war songs and romances, the context of Lithuanian and world literature in general. The motif of a daisy is the research object; it is analysed as part of landscape and as an attribute of the love fortunetelling “he loves me, he loves me not”. The major aim of the research is to explore the semantics and poetics of the motif of a daisy. The analysis revealed several meanings of the motif of a daisy: in poetry, a daisy can be identified with loneliness, sadness, a daisy appears as an attribute of Lithuanianness, the brightest object of landscape. The most typical attributes of landscape: blooming daisies, field, meadow, road, autumn, rain, wind. The second aspect of analysis pointed out the topic of fortune-telling varied in poetry; therefore, the genesis of fortune-telling was needed. According to ethnologists, fortune-telling spread throughout the junctions of various cultures, was known from the ancient times though not recorded in written sources. Diverse superstitions, beliefs were common in the Middle Ages; therefore, the spread of fortunetelling, popularity can be related to the language of flowers, the culture of knights or manors. In Lithuanian culture, various fortune-telling can be related to the ancient traditions of the Rasos / Kupolės festival. Still there is no unanimous opinion of ethnologists regarding this issue. The formula of fortune-telling varies in poetry, a daisy is highlighted as the flower of love, usually unhappy or already faded. The analysis of contemporary Lithuanian poetry (the end of the 20th – the beginning of the 21st century) shows that the motif of a daisy has become a poetical cliché, stereotype. [...]. |
