Abstract [eng] Nowadays anecdotes are the most popular and the most flexible genre of traditional folklore. Anecdotes can be grouped according to dominant characters. One of such characters is a representative of Lithuanian ethnographical regions, so, the object of this article is suvalkietis (Southwest Lithuanian) and žemaitis (Samogitian) in contemporary jokes. The anecdotes have been collected during the last 20 years. The aim of the article is to reveal the images of suvalkietis (Southwest Lithuanian) and žemaitis (Samogitian) in contemporary anecdotes. Stereotypical characteristics, themes, ethnographical peculiarities of the anecdotes are discussed. Anecdotes are created using characters that are relevant for a society. The abundance of anecdotes about representatives of Lithuanian ethnographical regions shows that ethnographical regions are still important for modern society. Suvalkietis (Southwest Lithuanian) is lean, rational, shifty, clear-minded, and not sentimental. Sentimentality as a characteristic feature appears very rarely, but it is also related to economy of suvalkietis. It could be said that suvalkietis (Southwest Lithuanian) is a rational part of Lithuanian. Exceptional dialect becomes the main feature of žemaitis (Samogitian) that is mentioned in anecdotes. There is also a particular group of anecdotes that are written and told in samogitian dialect. Stubbornness and slowness are also mentioned as quite common characteristics of žemaitis (Samogitian). Historical experience is also mentioned in anecdotes about žemaičiai (Samogitians). Ethnographical elements are not the main factor in these anecdotes. Besides Samogitian dialect (that was mentioned earlier) some architectural naming and traditional trades are mentioned. Ethnographical features are related to provincialism or lack of wit.
