Abstract [eng] The aim of this article is to discuss the narrator’s role and his language functions in the novel “Rūkas virš slėnių” by Romualdas Granauskas by using a descriptive theoretical and empirical material analysis and interpretative methods. It was noticed that the narrator is one of the most important figures in the novel. His functions include not only the portrayal of external details and events, but also the analysis of the emotional world. With reference to the narrative content, the narrator’s relationship to the addressee (the reader), the chosen language units and thought expression forms there are three functions of the narrator’s language: reference, expressive, and phatic. The novel in the article is perceived as a speech act, therefore identification of the narrator’s language functions is based on theory of speech acts by Roman Jakobson. Performing the reference function the narrator also fulfils his most important intention: tells the story to the reader. Using the expressive function the narrator analyzes the characters’ behaviours and feelings and assesses them and thus creates informative depictions of the characters of the novel. The phatic function of language is revealed through the narrator’s communication with the reader and trying to make influence on the reader. It was noticed that three narrator’s language features (reference, expressive, phatic) combine the separate themes, aspects, and plots of the novel into one cohesive whole.
