Abstract [eng] It is important for a special educator and a teacher of natural sciences to know how to adapt teaching materials and what outcomes to expect in various natural science classes while educating students with mild learning difficulties (with slight mental disorders). In order to organise the evaluation of knowledge of natural science of students with mild learning difficulties in accordance with the new content of education, we have initiated a number of experiments. One of them is evaluation of students’ knowledge and understanding of biology after having covered the topic of “Mammals”. The experiment revealed that students with mild learning difficulties have adequate knowledge and understanding about the variety and structure of mammals. The students’ knowledge about the most characteristic features of the mammals is inadequate; however, the students have an understanding about them. The students do not have exact knowledge but they have enough understanding about the kinds of hair of fur of mammals. They also have understanding about development of mammals. They are able to enumerate herbivorous mammals and predators, also to group them. Students know the places of habitation of mammals quite well. Students with mild learning difficulties describe the importance of the animals for people quite well; however, they have little understanding of their importance for the nature. While getting ready for biology classes, teachers experience difficulties connected with adaptation of the content of education for the students with mild learning difficulties, also with the lack of equipment. It would be useful to prepare and publish workbooks to teach natural sciences to students with mild learning difficulties; the workbooks should contain tasks geared towards knowledge and understanding, analysing, application of knowledge, and development of moral values.
