The aim of the article is to analyze the activity of J. Šliūpas in Latvia being a Lithuanian representative. The information was collected from various resources: the researches published by other authors, Latvian press, National History Museum of Latvia and J. Šliūpas’ archive in Šiauliai University as well as form Internet. The research was conducted by using the methods of resources analysis and comparativistic research. After analyzing the resources one can conclude that: 1) the information about J. Šliūpas’ diplomatic activity is available both in Lithuania and Latvia; however, it is not sufficiently studied and is interpreted differently; 2) the activities of J. Šliūpas as a representative of Lithuania lasted approximately five months – since his assignment on 12th August, 1919 to 25th December, 1919, when the letter to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (26th December, 1919) informed about the resignation; 3) J. Šliūpas’ duties are called variously; however, more frequently J. Šliūpas is called the representative of Lithuania in Latvia and Estonia; in the Latvian texts he is called as priekšstāvis (obsolete word) or pārstāvis, i.e. representative; 4) one claims that J. Šliūpas resigned his diplomatic office in Latvia due to disagreements with Ministers – one sources mention his disagreements with Augustinas Voldemaras, i.e. the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania; the other sources mention disagreements with Zigfrīds Meierovics - the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia; 5) according to J. Šliūpas the premises of the representation office were situated on st. Elžbietos, 15; however, the lack of information does not allow claiming that the old and the present buildings situated in Riga on st. Elizabetes, 15 are the same ones; [...]. |
