The word tirgus can be translated into Lithuanian by its equivalents turgus, mugė, rinka (the latter is used as an economic term). While investigating the equivalents of words with this root as well as their relations in the Latvian and Lithuanian languages, some cases were found when a Latvian word had several equivalent words in Lithuanian, e.g. tirgotava – parduotuvė, krautuvė (their equivalent in Latvian is veikals). A complex relation exists between the Latvian words gadatirgus and tirdziņš and their Lithuanian equivalent mugė: in some cases, instead of it, a diminutive turgelis should be chosen; however, this is not recorded in the dictionary of the Latvian and Lithuanian languages. |
