It is unknown when some potherbs an d medicinal plants came into Lithuanian homesteads. Though supposedly faster spread of foreign potherbs and medicinal plants might be related to establishment and pervasion of Christianity and monasteries. Nowadays potherbs, medicinal, aromatic, decorative plants are the part of national genetic resource of plants an d the object of researches and educational activities important to homesteads an d city parks. Now in gardens, vegetable gardens an d parterres people grow various foreign plants mostly originated from south Europe or southwest Asia, and local potherbs are grown more seldom. But medicinal plants in homesteads or farms has more interest, because growing these plants has deeer traditions, besides bigger part of medical plants can be used also as potherbs. The flora in Lithuania takes one third of all the territory. There are 1400 species growing in plant communities, 800 of them are used in medicine of our country. Half of them can be grown in homestads also. The first gardens near to houses emerged a long while ago, almost together with the beginning of agriculture. People brought the most beautiful sprouts from surrounding forests and planted them next to their house. [...]. |
