Abstract [eng] The aim of the present research is to analyse the linguistic expression and discuss the semantic paradigm of the images of the flowering poppy formed in Lithuanian poetry. The fragments of 126 poems have been analysed. The visual features of a poppy are most emphasized in the poetry. The most emphatic feature of the whole plant is the unstable position of the stem. The main characteristics of petals are vibration, the absence of resistance to the wind and a bright red (scarlet) colour. Poppies that are grown only in the kitchen- gardens and flower beds are of various colours, however, red is presented as the most common colour. The auditory and tactile peculiarities such as rustle and tenderness originated while moving are secondary. All the indicated features form the basis of metaphorisation. A flowering poppy is understood and metaphorically pictured as a plant, human being, artificial radiant; a poppy blossom is understood as a person’s or animal’s body part, moth, handicraft ware which is lifted, hung, put high or bound, natural radiant, burning body, place of bleeding; petals are described as material (cloth, paper) and products made of it, various shapes of liquid, earth, fire, sunlight. A poppy acquires characteristics of the realia that are identified with it (it is warm, sharp, it wants to travel, etc.), that is why its image of mentality highly expands: oppositional meanings appear (a poppy laughs and weeps, flowering is continuing and short, petals are tender and sharp, etc.). Physical peculiarities being raised to the level of ideas and evaluations, a poppy gains the meaning of symbol. It becomes the sign of beauty, delight, love, passion and pain, worry, torment, fight, generally, the visualized metaphor of life.
