Abstract [eng] When we name a thing or a phenomenon, i. e. when we give a name, we show that we know it and understand its essence. The description that specifies the name of an abstract phenomenon gives additional information. The aim of the present paper is to discuss those character features which are ascribed to the national character, i. e. specified by the description Lithuanian. The data is drawn from the Contemporary Lithuanian Language Corpus (access via Internet http://donelaitis. vdu. lt.). The analysis is based on those word-combinations which name character features. The conclusion is that quite often the antonymic features are ascribed to Lithuanian national character. In the texts under analysis, a Lithuanian is humble and self-righteous, reserved and proud, hard-working and passive, lazy. The antonymity can be explained by means of the peculiarity of the object which is described. When such phenomena are discussed the starting point is very important. Usually the feature of national character is specified by more particular description that reflects the estimation of an abstract phenomenon. Diligence and envy are most often mentioned Lithuanian character features. In the language worldview, not only Lithuanian character features, but also other specific Lithuanian phenomena of the inner world are recorded.
