Abstract [eng] Substantiva communia denominates and at the same time describes a person or an animal according to his/her character and other features. The distinctive feature of substantiva communia is their usage in pejorative meaning. The periphery consists of melioratives and neutrally used words which are very mobile, i.e. The context and usage may provide them with negative shades of meaning. Due to their expressiveness, substantiva communia are mostly words of colloquial speech and dialects. In modern usage, the margins between colloquialisms and dialect words are blurred. This is due to the specifics of the analysed class of substantiva communia as well as to some other factors. In standard Lithuanian, the same semantic content cannot be expressed by the nouns of masculine and feminine gender; therefore there is no possibility of a synonymous choice.
