The beginning of Lithuanian lyrical short story is related with the name of Jonas Biliūnas. At the beginning of the 20th c. he wrote such short stories as “Kliudžiau” (I’ve Shot It), “Brisiaus galas” (The End of the Dog Brisius). In these stories relations between the man and animal are transferred to the level of moral ethical issue which is revealed by the structure of the lyrical narration. The tradition of lyrical narration is continued in the Lithuanian literature of the second half of the 20th century; it is related with the works of such writers as Juozas Aputis, Romualdas Granauskas, Saulius Šaltenis, Bronius Radzevičius, etc. The object of a more through analysis of the present article is short stories from the collection “Gegužė ant nulūžusio beržo” (A Cuckoo on a Broken Birch) (1985) by Juozas Aputis. In Juozas Aputis’ short stories we find the structure of lyric narration with predomination of the monologue-based narration. The author’s position and his assessment are expressed by the principles of organisation of the narration. Juozas Aputis depicts a village man, whose milieu is being impacted by the changing times. The moral damage caused by the clash between a villager and civilisation is revealed by the changes of values, the opposition of time. One of the means of depiction and assessment is the name. This can be a character’s name (a proper, a common name, a surname) as well as the sign of a period or epoch (names of outstanding people, famous pieces of art, countries) creating a particular emotional intonation of the narration, expressing a generalised philosophical meaning. |
