This article presents the method for recognition of transport license plate by video. The system has a camera (resolution 640 x 480), video card for video input, computer and software. Firstly are detected vertical and horizontal lines in video frame by correlation with vertical and horizontal 10 pix line templates. After combining vertical and horizontal results we have the possible plate zones. The zones are verified by histograms: if there are symbols in inside zone, the histogram has characteristic valleys. After verification the zone is cropped to symbol according to histogram valleys. Symbols were detected by correlation between template symbol and symbol cropped from video frame. The present method was tested with 70 different quality video frames with transport license plate inside. Recognition accuracy is 98.41%, results are very good taking into consideration the fact that video frames were of very different quality. The method was realized in C++ class and is suitable for parallel counting. The software was compatible with different hardware and operating systems that support TrollTech / QT Software QT v4 library. |
