Abstract [eng] The article analyses the cultural context of the poetical semantics of the image of stone in Osip Mandelshtam’s first book of poems “The Stone”. Mandelshtam is a famous representative of Russian Acmeism. The etymological problem of the term “acmeism” has not been worked out yet, so the author of the article suggests linking the origin of this term to the Lithuanian word “akmuo” (stone). The image of stone is fundamental in the works of different acmeists. The collection of Mandelshtam’s lyrics published in 1913 is often related to his acmeist manifest. The stone in the poems of Mandelshtam is usually understood as the image of hardness and static form being a dynamic material to create masterpieces of architecture. Here one can see the parallel – the word is an analogous building material for another form of art that is poetry. The stone in Mandelshtam’s poetry is presented not only in its literal meaning. It is also a steeple, a belfry, a dome, a marble column which is the main building material found in gothic masterpieces. The image of stone in Mandelshtam’s poetry embodies features that are not typical of stone. It discloses the joy of motion and creation, closeness to human being.
