Abstract [eng] |
German representatives of the Age of Enlightenment mooted the idea that the process of change of the heroic epic poem to novel occurred not through constructing new poetic form, but while the new human spirit’s content gained new expression shape, and the corresponding aesthetic and poetic forms are pre-conditioned by consciousness observing the world through them. Consciousness of the epic and the novel project different systems of existential values, different person’s self-awareness, differently orient self-expression of an individual. The constructed subsistence of the epic consciousness in “Beowulf” is based on the exaltation idea of one’s nation, which is highlighted negatively depicting representatives of opposing nation. “Beowulf” is based on an important genre canon, which has been kept by many other outstanding European heroic epic poems – the epic hero successfully combines heterogeneous ethic systems, the code of the hero and the Christian-evangel ethics. The protagonist Beowulf of the Anglo-Saxon epic poem corresponds with requirements of the heroic code because of his physical strength; ability to overcome the evil embodiment Grendel, charity to his soldiers and due to the mentioned things, Beowulf deserves the right to be the king of the Geats. In this respect, the European heroic epic poems could be treated as the solid literary phenomenon, the foundation of which is the epic creating mind. |
