Abstract [eng] The article discusses the theme of stone in P. Ackroyd’s book “London: the Biography”. The method of reader response theory related to the ideas of H. R. Jauss was employed. It is claimed that P. Ackroyd’s text explicates and/or implicates ideas about the city of London related to two aspects: the human body and the image of stone. The descriptions of stone and human body in the chapters of the book chosen for analysis create for the reader the vision of travelling along stony streets and the expectations of contrast between real life and historical life episodes in the city of past and present London. The attempt was made to identify three factors of H. R. Jauss’ horizon of expectations in order to emphasize the book’s novelty linked to the genre of biography and reader’s expectations. It was presupposed that allusions dealing with stone, descriptions of stone, present the usual topic of travel literature. The historical, literary allusions related to the city of London have been discussed to emphasize the originality of the literary work. The aspects which arise while discussing P. Ackroyd’s “London: the Biography ”, according to the ideas of H. R. Jauss, provide possibilities to approach the question of analyzing the discourse, post-modern fictional biography as a literary phenomenon, which is not constrained by the canon of clear-set literary rules.
