Investigation of the meta-language of non-linguists' texts provides us with better knowledge not only of the language itself, but also with linguistic awareness of society; that is why it is useful for traditional, 'pure', linguistics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, and ethnolinguistics.The present article discusses meta - linguistic units with meta - linguistic commentaries (MCs) which encompass various forms of the adjective švelnus (tender, gentle, kind, mild) or the adverb švelniai (tenderly, gently, kindly, etc.): švelnus (švelnesnis, švelniausias) žodis (a tender, more tender, the most tender word); švelniai (švelniau) vadina (calls tenderly, more tenderly, etc.); švelniai (švelniau, švelniausiai) tariant (putting it mildly), etc. The adjective is most often used with the noun žodis (word), while the adverb is used with tariant, kalbant, sakant, pasakius the Present Participle or Gerund' uttering, speaking, saying, telling', inflective forms of the verbs (pa)vadinti, (pa)sakyti (to call, to say) or appropriate participles. 482 examples were collected and analysed.
