Abstract [eng] The article introduces a survey based on parents’ estimated relationships between depression in parents raising disabled children and features of their children’s disabilities. 104 (83.2 %) mothers and 21 (16.8 %) fathers raising disabled children between the ages of 2–18 years took part in the research. 71 (85.5 %) of mothers and 12 (14.5 %) of fathers took part in a control group of parents raising non-disabled children between the ages of 2–18 years. The age of parents of disabled children varied from 23 to 62 (the average age was 38.17 years; the standard deviation was 8.33). The age of the control group parents varied from 24 to 50 (the average age was 34.14 years; the standard deviation was 5.70). In order to assess the parents’ depression, the Zung depression rating scale (Zung-SRD) was employed and the children’s functional self-sufficiency was investigated by applying the test on the children’s functional independence measure (WeeFim). The research results showed that depression in parents raising disabled children is more apparent than that of parents who raise non-disabled children; and depression in mothers raising disabled children is higher than that of fathers raising disabled children. It was estimated that depression in parents raising children with a complex disability is expressed more strongly than that of parents raising children having one disability. Parents whose children are more independent are endowed with fewer subdued spirits than parents whose children’s functional independence is lower.
