Abstract [eng] |
When Kaunas became the provisional capital of Lithuania, the old marketplaces, dating back to tsarist rule, were still active and were becoming more modernized. Animal markets held an important position in the life of Kaunas citizens until the mid-1930s. However, they were relocated from the town center to the outskirts of town. During different time periods, Kaunas had two working marketplaces in the Old Town, two in Žaliakalnis and Naujamiestis, and a number of local markets in Šančiai, Aleksotas and Vilijampolė. The central marketplace (known as The Old Marketplace), situated near the Presidential Residence and the Parliament House, was open during the entire period of independence because of its convenient location. It could be easily reached by traders coming across the bridges over the Nemunas and the Neris rivers. The administration of Kaunas’ marketplaces was one of the priority activities of the municipality and guaranteed it a constant income. At the same time, the municipality was in charge of their development, modernization and the improvement of sanitary conditions. The marketplaces played a considerable role in the everyday life of contemporary Kaunas citizens. |
