Abstract [eng] During the last decade the issue of metaphor research methodology has been heatedly debated. The paper suggests several reasons for the debate and sets out to overview several approaches towards the issue. Despite the usage-based approach widely advocated by cognitive linguists, the authors of the Theory of Conceptual Metaphor adhere to an exclusively introspective point of view, not supported by any quantitative parameters of investigation. The American School has eventually started to implement the methodology of psycholinguistic experiment, where the focus is on the processes of reasoning and memory, whereas language is mainly used for priming. The European School of research has traditionally adhered to the “textual” approach relying on the combinability of words. The paper introduces several methodologies: Gerard S teen’s five step approach, the MIP (Metaphor Identification Procedure), the MIPVU (Metaphor Identification Procedure as amended by researchers in Vrije University, Amsterdam), and corpus methodologies, mostly based on highlighting the key words in the source and target domains. The key words signal metaphorical patterns. The paper concludes by an expressed support for the objectification of linguistic research, a clearly identifiable tendency in present-day linguistics. Identifying combinability patterns of the above key words seems to be a reliable criterion instrumental in linguistic metaphor research.
