The analysis of text genres is one of the key objectives in text linguistics. The contemporary approaches in text linguistics suggest that genres can be analysed and determined only in the presence of other genres. The analysis of a book could be based on a “family” of text genres related to the book, a number of texts with different content but similar function. In the present research book cover texts and annotations on the last page of the book have been chosen as the object of the research. The aim of the research is to determine the features, similarities and differences of the two text genres on the grounds of holistic models of genre analysis. Having analysed the situational, functional, thematic and grammatical features of book cover texts and annotations on the last page of the book it can be stated that book cover texts are less standardised then annotations on the last page of the book. Annotations on the last page of the book always present the content of the book; however they lack a thematic diversity that is better exposed in book cover texts. Book cover texts do not always present the content of the book; they usually provide some information about the author and give extracts from the book reviews. Book cover texts have a clearer expressed appellative text function. The key grammatical feature of both the analysed text genres is the complexity of linguistic expression which is determined by the size and the function of the text: a short text has to convey the... [to full text]. |
