Abstract [eng] Nature has a very important position in the world-view of Lithuanians, because at all times Lithuanian people sought safety, help and harmony with their environment. Thus it is natural that the depiction of nature has an important place in the works of many Lithuanian writers. In the novellas of Antanas Vaičiulaitis the importance of nature is obvious, too. The main aim of this work is to explore the functions of the tree in the novellas of A. Vaičiulaitis. The first part of the paper deals with the main concepts of the World Tree in the universal mythology and heathenish religion of Lithuanians; we feel it necessary to explore the functions and the equivalents of this Tree; to explore the differences between the model of the World Tree in the universal mythology and the World Tree stated in Lithuanian religion, mythology and folklore. The second part of the present paper is devoted to the functions of the tree in the novellas of A. Vaičiulaitis: we aimed at finding the relation between the functions of the tree in the novellas and functions of the tree in universal mythology; at establishing the relation between the functions of the tree in the novellas and functions of the tree in Lithuanian religion, mythology and folklore; at demonstrating the importance of the tree in the creation of the feelings and emotions in the novellas.
