Abstract [eng] The aim of this article is to analyze the modes of expression of the contemporary father identity by discussing historical changes in the father identity and father movements in the U.S. and Western Europe, and by presenting the situation in Lithuania. In the beginning of the twentieth century the authority of the father began to falter because of the entrenchment of industrialized societies in the United States and Western Europe. The frustration of dictatorial regimes after World War II led to the complete downturn of the authority of the father. The crisis within the patriarchal family was caused by women’s labour and a transformation of consciousness influenced by the feminist movement towards the end of the twentieth century. The simultaneous origin of the sexual liberation (gay and lesbian) movements discredited the standard of heterosexuality. At the end of the twentieth century the model of a “new father” arose and the father movement was being formed in the U.S. The “new father” role is an alternative to the previous patriarch in the family. Researchers consider this “new father” model to be a successful mode of readjustment to the prevalent household of two working partners in modern society. However, the “new father” role is controversial and it is not easily accepted by men.
