The epistolary novel, otherwise called the novel in love-letters, originated in the first half of the 16th century. This generic form enjoyed its golden age over the next two centuries. Not many epistolary novels were written in the 20th century, this genre fell out of use but it did not become extinct. Etienne Barilier’s novel “Praha” is written in the best traditions of the epistolary novel. Since the emergence of the genre, the novel in love letters has followed a certain narrative scheme: 1) the development and analysis of the feeling of love, 2) a real or supposed authenticity of letters that strengthens the aesthetic and moral effect of the narrative, 3) the presence of paratexts. The theories on the epistolary genre highlight the monodic and polyphonic ideas characteristic of its narrative. The love story which is at the heart of the narrative is followed by a moral discussion as well as the historical and political developments of the plot. The epistolary novel “Praha” represents a complex network of the relationships between the addressers and the addressees. All the letters are addressed to an anonymous recipient, a young Swiss man who is carrying out the so-called “Prague Spring” investigation. The novel contains no response of the addressee but it can be inferred from the letters addressed to him. Barilier’s novel is a polyphonic narrative.
