Abstract [eng] Aim. Most empirical research has been based on understanding J. Marcia’s structural identity. Currently, identity is defined as being rooted in emotion, emerging in relationships and developing as a dynamic, self-organizing system. Additionally, identity formation involves intrapsychic changes during adolescence. It is necessary to use new methods for identity evaluation in order to understand its development in a relational context. Qualitative research: Biographical narrative interpretative analysis was conducted in order to understand identity formation in adolescents who live in foster care. Method, subjects. Six teenagers, ages 15–16 (3 girls, 3 boys) participated in this research. Biographical narrative interpretative method was used to collect and interpret data. Results, conclusions: Data analysis revealed three types of told life stories: (a) fight as way to survive, (b) fantasy; the way which helps to deal with reality and fragmented life stories, and (c) hidden self. The initial hypothesis, i.e., that different types of told life stories are connected with different dynamics of identity formation in adolescence, was confirmed indicating importance in the development of close and long lasting relationship in a process of coping with traumatic experience.
