Abstract [eng] The aim of the present research was to assess prevalence of smoking and drinking habits between medical students and their attitude to those harmful habits. In the year 2003, we conducted an anonymous survey of 543 first year Odontology and Medicine students in Kaunas University of Medicine. One third of the medical students, taking part in our survey, indicated smoking regularly or occasionally. Almost one fifth of them maintained that they started smoking because of the studying stress, problems in the family or the stress of socializing with friends. Most of the student smokers tolerated their friends smoking. Nine out of ten students had tried strong alcoholic drinks. Two fifths of the students maintained that alcohol gives pleasure, and one fifth of them indicated that alcohol is necessary for celebrating and on some other occasions. More than half of the students thought, that strong drinks were mood improving.
