Abstract [eng] The Master Thesis is aimed at description of phonetic peculiarities typical for Skuodas district sub-dialects collected from recorded conversations with the presenters and transcribed coherent oral texts; the study of sub-dialects from social-cultural aspect basing on the received questionnaire data; the comparison of sub-dialect information. The most important fields of analysis are the following: the use of language, attitude to language use, national and dialectic self-awareness. 57 presenters of the younger, adult and older generations from Kerviai, Vižančiai, Skuodas, Šarkė, Ylakiai, Luknės, Mosėdis were questioned. The analysis of sociolinguistic data showed that the dialectic language prevails in various private and public spaces, ordinary situations of language use (when thinking, calculating, communicating with animals). The standard language is more often used in religious sphere (when praying, making confession, saying grace); it is considered to be more appropriate for using and writing in mass media. Both linguistic codes (dialectic and standard languages) are chosen and denominated as the most appropriate for singing, are often realized as suitable for writing and speaking in mass media, communicating with unfamiliar people. In some cases one observed the influence of presenters’ age, education and spheres of activities. The research revealed that according to self-awareness the majority of respondents consider themselves to be Samogitians, and consider their native language to be not only Lithuanian bus also the Samogitian dialect – they speak, read and write. The people who speak using the dialect and the dialect itself are usually related to respect, patriotism and habit. The domination of dialect in various situations, the significance of Samogitian identity, positive attitude to dialect itself, its comprehension as a real native language prove the livability and prospective viability of Skuodas district dialects.
