Abstract [eng] This M.A. final work analyses the criterias determining the choice of non-formal music education institutions in Šiauliai town from the parents‘ viewpoint. The subject of the research – criterias determining parental attitudes towards the choice of non-formal music education institutions in Šiauliai town. The research has been conducted in the seven non-formal music education institutions in Šiauliai town. The purpose of this M.A. final work – to ascertain the criterias determining parental attitudes towards the choice of non-formal music education institutions in Šiauliai. The children‘s quality and motivated participating in non-formal education is an urgent problem. As well as in all Lithuania, in Šiauliai there are quite many non-formal music education institutions which meet the different needs of children‘s education thus it is becoming more and more complicated for the parents and children to choose. However, so far it has not been analysed what criterias determine the choice of non-formal education intitutions, consequently the research has been decided to carry out. 88 parents of the students from 7 non-formal music education intitutions have become the respondents of the research. Places of the research: The boys and youth‘s choir of Šiauliai town and a singing school „Dagilėlis“, the children‘s music studio „En-den-du“ ( Šiauliai students homes), Šiauliai music school „Yamaha“, Šiauliai town 1st music school, Dainų music school, the children‘s country music studio „Svirplys“, the family and youth leisure centre „Penklinė“ song&dance studio “Chi-chi-cha-cha“. To achieve the purpose of this work the goals have been set: to analyse the documents which regulate the non-formal education in the education system of Lithuania; to reveal the importance of the non-formal education in the education system of Lithuania; to view the options of non-formal music education institutions in Šiauliai town; to prepare a survey which helps to ascertain the criterias determining parental attitudes towards the choice of non-formal music education institutions in Šiauliai town. The results of the survey have showed that the majority of the respondents do not communicate with their children enough to know what their children do and how they feel during non-formal music education activities. They cannot specify the needs and expectations of their children. As a result it has also been difficult for them to specify their own needs and expectations which would help to ascertain the criterias determining their choice of non-formal music education institutions for their children. The analysis of the research data has revealed that the main criterias determining the parents‘ choice of non-formal music education institutions are: the qualification and competency of teachers, the price of activities, physical and emotional environment, quality and nonmonotonous activities, reasonable leisure time. Choosing the institution parents consider the achievements of the institution, the friends‘ opinion, the amount of concerts (contests), children‘s motivation, development, self-realization. The obtained data has showed that non-formal music education institutions only partly satisfy the children‘s needs and expectations as well as their parents.
