Abstract [eng] The present Master’s Thesis focuses on the analysis of the concept of quality of life and researches the quality of life and the related determining factors in Šiauliai District. The paper consists of three parts. The first part presents an analysis of the concept of quality of life and its development. The indexes of quality of life are compared and the dimensions, determining factors and indexes of quality of life are studied. The paper also analyzes the concept of rural development, rural issues and the significance of strategic management in ensuring the improvement of quality of life. The research methods and research planning are described and the research tools are substantiated in the second part of the paper. The third part includes the description, analysis, comparison and categorization of the survey data obtained from Šiauliai District residents. Issues prevalent in different regional municipalities of Šiauliai District are identified and possible solutions are determined. The interview conducted with senior specialists of the regional municipalities of Šiauliai District helped to reveal the economic, social and residential issues in rural territories and to estimate possibilities to improve the quality of life. A hypothetical model of improvement of quality of life was formulated. This model defines the importance of the communities taking action and participating in the management process, the necessity of developing the entrepreneurship and creative skills of residents and following the principles of sustainable development.
