Abstract [eng] |
The Vilnius Medical Society cared greatly for its history and preserved it very well. There are three historical albums of the Society known to us today: (1) the “Liber aureus” (the Golden Book), which contains a list of members of the Society from its founding in 1805 until 1925, (2) a photo album of the members of the Society, and (3) a supplemental photo album („Album Historicum“), comprising portraits of the famous Vilnius University personalities taken from various pictorial and graphic materials; the first was proposed by the Society’s chairman Dr. Hippolitus Jundzill in 1853, two last were established 1897. There are 133 photographs in this album to our day. These photographs were taken in Vilnius photo studios, but some were from Russia, Germany, Ukraine and other countries. Nearly one third of the photos do not have any information about photographers inscribed on the reverse, and there are six people who have not yet been identified. Digitization of these photos would be helpful in preserving them for the future, and might someday clarify the mysteries surrounding them. |
