Abstract [eng] The thesis explores the impact of the factors of the network society on changes in the roles of libraries. The object of research is changes in the roles of libraries in the network society based on the case study of changes in the roles of libraries in Lithuania in 1990–2014. The aim is to form a theoretical model of changes in the roles of libraries in the network society and the methodology for researching changes in the roles of libraries, and to substantiate the specific characteristics of the development of library roles in Lithuania and trends in changes in the period 1990–2014. The soft systems methodology is used in the doctoral dissertation and three research levels are applied: 1) Research of the library system and change of its elements (roles); 2) Conceptual definition of the library system; 3) Testing of the formed model through empirical research. After the implementation of all stages, the factors of the network society that have the greatest impact on shaping the roles of libraries and also the elements of the library system and their interaction are identified and theoretically substantiated. A universal research methodology is also formed allowing to determine the change in the roles of libraries and applicable in purposeful formation of library activities in the changing environment. The empirical research identifies the specific characteristics of the development of library roles in Lithuania and trends in changes in the period 1990–2014.
