Abstract [eng] Relevance of the topic. The choice of a profession is one of the essential and the most difficult decisions in the life. The importance of such choice is huge, whereas this decision is going to make influence on the whole life. A profession determines a person’s social status, his/her status in a society. According to L. Ustinavičiūtė, A. Katkonienė, I. Žemaitaitytė (2011), the choice of a profession and the realisation of own abilities is one of the major elements of human self-realisation. In forms 9 and 10, pupils start to think what they are going to do having graduated the basic school. It is probable that such thoughts are especially relevant to the pupils of 10-th forms. In consideration of that, it is necessary to go deeper and establish, which factors determine their choice of a profession. The Novelty of the paper. So far, there were not performed any researches, which would identify, what determines the choice of the profession of the pupils of the basic schools of the whole Kelmė Town and District. Data were analysed in 2 aspects: by the form and the gender. The problem of the research. The problem of the choice of a profession is topical. The selection of a profession is a complicated process, which is usually accompanied by pressure and stress. Pupils not always select correctly their vocational paths. A human being feeling incompatibility of his/her personality and the selected profession suffers lots of shocks. It is necessary to choose a profession very responsibly. Hypotheses: 1. Pupils’ vocational choice is determined by inner factors: health condition, vocation, inborn physical characteristics, abilities. 2. Pupils’ vocational choice is determined by outer factors: family, friends, the prestige of a profession, real employment opportunities, and career possibilities. 3. The pupils of the 10th grade have more certainty about the choise of future proffesion than the pupils of the 9th grade. 4. The boys have more certainty about the choise of future proffesion than the girls. The object of the research – the factors of the vocational choice of the pupils of forms 9-10. The objective of the research – to analyse the factors of the vocational choice of the pupils of forms 9-10. The tasks of the research: 1. To analyse scientific literature in order to reveal the factors determining a vocational choice. 2. To compare the factors of the vocational choice of the pupils of forms 9 – 10. 3. To compare the factors of the vocational choice of girls and boys. 4. To identify, which factors – inner or outer – prevail choosing a profession. Methodological provisions. The methodology of the research is based on the theory of the compatibility of a personality and profession (of characteristics and factors). Career opportunities, success, satisfaction in your career and life depend on the selection of a profession. Moreover, reference was made on the theory of social sciences, which states that the career choice is the product of an environment and the experience of learning from environment. The humanistic personality theory was also referred to. The research methods: 1. Theoretical methods: studying and analysing, comparison and generalisation of scientific literature. 2. Empiric methods: the quantitative research method was used to perform the research. An anonymous survey was performed. Data have been processed using the software Microsoft Office Excel 2003. Conclusions. It was established that the opinion of the pupils of forms 9-10 as well as the opinion of boys and girls was the same on the most of the questions. The majority of respondents had already decided what they were going to do having graduated the basic school, which profession they would choose. Their parents’ opinion on the issue of the profession choice was the most important. Health and a family were the most important values. Improvement was the most valued in professional activities. The inner factors of vocational choice were prevailing: a health condition, available abilities, interest in the future profession. Pursuing to choose properly a profession, good self-cognition as well as acquired knowledge and competencies were the most important. The pupils of the 9-th forms were more self-determined concerning their choice of professions than the pupils of the 10-th forms. The most important information about the desired profession for girls was the possibility of employment for girls, and guys were preferred the value of wages. Girls experienced more difficulties choosing their professions than guys. The fear to make a mistake was felt.
