Abstract [eng] The present Master Thesis presents an analysis of career planning strategies employed by children living in social risk families based on the experience of Lithuanian and foreign scientists. Research question: how do the children raised in social risk families plan their career? Research object: children’s career planning. The goal of the study is to analyze the personal strategies for career planning of children raised in social risk families. The following objectives were formulated in order to achieve the set goal: 4. To analyze the theoretical approaches towards career planning strategies employed by children in families at social risk by summarizing the manifestation of the unanimity and diversity of the concepts of career and the complex nature of career planning strategies as viewed by children. 5. To create a theoretical personal career planning model that will provide the conditions to analyze the career planning strategies employed by children in families at social risk. 6. To analyze the personal career planning strategies of children from social risk families. Hypothesis: presumably, children raised in families at social risk neither show interest in nor plan their career. Research methods Data gathering methods: 4. Analysis of scientific literature provided the possibility to reveal the theoretical aspects of career planning strategies employed by children in families at social risk and to generate the personal career planning model. 5. Semi-structured interview served as a basis for analyzing the career planning strategies of children from social risk families. 6. Essay provided the possibility to reveal the opinion of the children on career planning. Data analysis methods: Content analysis providing the conditions to: • summarize the theoretical aspects of career planning strategies employed by children in families at social risk, • analyze the open-ended questions of semi-structured interview, and • reveal the opinion of children on career planning as expressed in their essays. The results of the semi-structured interview were processed and summarized by applying the statistical data analysis method. The research data were processed with MS Excel 2007 and SPSS 16.0 (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences). The research results revealed that children from social risk families planned their career, set career goals and chose strategies to reach such goals. Children believed that career could bring material welfare and social interests, i.e. possibility to receive bigger salary in the future, provide help to others, and do something they enjoy. Most children focused on job opportunities in the field of customer service. Children in families at social risk tended to plan their career themselves but they did ask for the opinion of their parents. The majority of parents did not recommend the children to choose their profession. Most respondents understood the importance of knowing oneself and learning about the profession when choosing one’s career as well as the significance of making the right decision.
