Abstract [eng] The aim of this dissertation is to explore the workings of social control in urban space. Its theoretical basis consists of M. Foucault's notions of disciplinarity and biopolitics, and builds up on insights from cultural criminology, critical urban studies, legal geography and semiotic landscapes to create an analytical framework. The latter conceptualizes social control in urban space as a combination of physical, legal and discursive aspects. An empirical case study was conducted in a centrally-located area in Vilnius, Lithuania, employing visual methods and legal document analysis. The results proved that disciplinary and biopolitical modalities of power may be observed in each of the three aspects of urban space. Neither one dominates specific types of structures or the urban milieu as a whole. Rather, they frequently work to reinforce and confirm each other. A detailed typology of disciplinary and biopolitical strategies of social control in uban space has been provided as an outcome of the work.
