Abstract [eng] |
In this dissertation, the semantic types of the relative time (taxis) and their expression in Russian and Lithuanian sentences with converbs are investigated. For the purpose of the study, a specialised sample of Russian adverbial participles, Lithuanian half-participles and past tense participles was created (based on the data of RNC and CCLL annotated comparable subcorpora of: a) fiction; b) educational and scholarly (non-fiction) literature; c) spoken language). The analysis identifies the factors influencing the semantics of relative time in sentences with converbs, compares and quantifies their indicators in different sections of the sample. On the basis of the model of time as a relation and the analysis of the expressions of relative time, the semantic types of relations denoted by Russian and Lithuanian converbs are described and classified: temporal relationship, causal relationship, and the relationship of coincidence. These relationships can be regarded as the semantic areas of the common field of relatedness linked by the category of relative time. The study shows that the systematic distinguishing feature of the Lithuanian verbal aspect category is the functioning of Lithuanian perfective (biaspectual) verbs in narrative present tense, habitual tense (present and past frequentative) contexts, where they are identical to Russian imperfective verbs, and in the contexts of coincidence, where Lithuanian half-participles of perfective verbs are identical to Russian perfective converbs. |
