The present paper investigates the perception of empirically imperceptible phenomenon, which is called FEAR. Relying on the use of word FEAR in the republic, regional, popular, specialized press, the nonfiction, memoir, the stenograph of parliament, the public documents of Lithuania Republic, the translations of philosophical literature, we made an attempt to establish, as Lithuanians understand and in the language express the state of emotion, called FEAR. The material is undertaken from the columns of press and documents (which were mentioned above) of the collector of texts (http://donelaitis.vdu.lt). Discussing the concept of FEAR, support is done not to entire paradigm of FEAR, but only to the invariant of a number of synonyms – FEAR. We are guided by this opinion on the fact that this lexeme automatically covers entire semantic field of FEAR, i.e. in the value of the abstract being investigated is accommodated the value of all synonyms of FEAR (horror, scare, panic). FEAR in Lithuanian language is understood by such conceptual metaphors as FEAR – THING, FEAR – GOODS, FEAR – CONTAINER, FEAR – SMELL, FEAR – LIQUID, FEAR – FIRE, FEAR – NATURAL FORCE, FEAR – BURDEN, FEAR – FOOD, FEAR – ILLNESS, FEAR – NATURAL BEING, FEAR – PERSONALITY, FEAR – ENEMY, FEAR – SOCIAL SUPERIOR, FEAR – ANIMAL, FEAR – PLANT. Most frequently it is characterized as THING and PERSONALITY. FEAR, conceptualized as thing is mostly controlled by individual, but the state of emotion is uncontrolled when it is characterized as PERSONALITY. Lithuanians understand FEAR as a strong and dangerous emotion. |
