Abstract [eng] |
The thesis uses geocriticism and urban studies tools to analyse, from an intermedial comparative point of view, how Vilnius is represented in the works of prose and poetic documentaries of the second half of the 20th century. The research focuses on the relationship between the city and its texts and the impact of the city on the narratives. The analysed corpus consists of texts from different media from three periods. Firstly, how Vilnius was depicted in literature and cinema in the early Soviet era: Mykolas Sluckis Adomo Abuolys (1966), Jonas Avyžius Chameleono spalvos (1979), compared with Almantas Grikevičius Laikas eina per miestą (1966), and Robertas Verba Sneis ir žemė (1968). The next chapter studies Soviet-era texts with a particular focus on representations of Užupis: Tūla (1993) by Jurgis Kunčinas, Vilko dantų karoliai (1990) by Leonardas Gutauskas, compared with Dešimt minučių prieš Ikaro skrydį by Arūnas Matelis (1990). The last part focuses on the material from the end of the Soviet era and the dawn of independence: Ričardas Gavelis Jauno žmogaus memuarai (1989), Vilniaus pokeris (1989) and Paskutinioji žemės monių karta (1995) juxtaposed with the images of Vilnius in the film Iliuzijos (1993) by Diana and Kornelijus Matuzevičius family. The methodological approach adopted in analysis allows to reveal the extent to which the city influences the texts in terms of structure and content and to compare how the strategies of representing the city have changed over time. |
