Abstract [eng] The time spent at school is significant as each young person has to solve quite a relevant task – what profession to choose. The profession is chosen for entire life, therefore it is important that it, as if a life partner, would be chosen with a great consideration. Parents play a significant role in selecting a profession. Families are primary institutions transferring their children the nation’s and family’s traditions, shape human values and prepare children to become full members of society. For the reason that family’s environment is most beneficial to observe skills, it is possible to state that parents, brothers, sisters can mostly influence the professional decision making. Research subject: family’s influence on youth’s professional decision making. Research purpose: to investigate family’s influence on schoolchildren’ professional decision making. Research methodology: research methodology is based on A. Roe’s theory of career choice and D. E. Super career development concept. Research methods: Theoretic. Trying to examine family’s influence on youth professional decision making, a scientific, pedagogical and psychological literature analysis was carried out. Empirical. For research purpose, a questionnaire, prepared for children of secondary schools and their parents, was prepared. Statistical. Obtained results were processed and calculated with Excel and SPSS software programs. Research sample and organization. The research was carried out in December, 2009 at Klaipeda X gymnasium. People, participating in research, were children (age 16-18) and their parents. 130 pupils and 80 parents participated in this questionnaire. Having summarized research results it is possible to state that parents and friends significantly influence professional decision making. Parents share their personal experience, related to professional decisions. Young people, when choosing their profession, are strongly recommended that it is important to gain university education and that the chosen studies would be closer to home. According to the expressed opinion of young people, family should mostly contribute in trying to make a decision, related to professional choice.
