Abstract [eng] Topicality. As the processes in the labour market are dynamic, requirements to specialists’ qualifications are constantly altering. Therefore art teachers often confront new challenges as they have to adjust to social, economical changes and overstocked educational labour market. In accordance with facts of the latest labour market situation analysis, art teachers take one of last places according to their opportunities to be employed in the education system. These problems are extremely relevant in the West and North regions of Lithuania, that have their own higher educational institutions qualifying art teachers and where labour market is overstocked by these specialists. Current situation forces art teachers to look for new placement opportunities not only in public, but also in the private sector and become not only the users of the work places, but to create ones themselves. However to do this art teachers need some specific qualifications, they must be quite mobile in order to apply their qualifications as well as to develop some new ones. That’s where some questions arise – do the qualifications acquired during the study years let them compete successfully in the labour market? Are the opportunities of employment in the non-educational system available to them and what determines the possibilities? These problems are the main issues determining the pedagogical substance of the work. The object of the research: Art teachers’ preparation to work and placement opportunities. The purpose: Analysing art teachers’ preparation to work and placement opportunities and factors in the West and North regions of Lithuania in the context of changes happening in the contemporary world of labour. The methods of the research: analysis of research literature; comparative analysis of documentary; quantitative research with qualitative research elements, using the mixed type questions (application questionnaire by email); quantitative analysis of data, using the descriptive statistics according to SPSS. Research sample, base, instrument: the sample of this research includes 225 respondents who are art teachers (93), last-year bachelor degree full-time students (51), head teachers (55) and Chief executive officers from various companies (26) in Šiauliai and Klaipėda regions. Respondents were given the mixed type questionnaire form, intended to sort out the opinion of each respondents’ group about art teachers’ preparation to work and placement opportunities, and 3 study programs of academic (ŠU, KU) higher education level institutions were analysed with regard to particularity of the program’s study objectives. Summing up the analysis of academic (bachelor degree) pedagogic study programs content and questionnaire research facts, we can say that art educators are only partially qualified to compete in contemporary labour market, because the study programs emphasize the professional competences associated with some specific knowledge of the art subject, but not with some really important individual features (like critical thinking and so on), cultural values, management, information technology, communications and etc. abilities, learning to learn, which the contemporary world of labour demand, therefore their placement opportunities are limited.
